The memories from the first to the last journey, the roads and the landscapes of Texas, the sky of the Southwestern United States in all its shades and beauty, emotions lighting up faces and day to day life portrayed in ephemeral moments, mixed with memories of people met along the road or who shared a part of your journey: these are the elements that make up “America”, a project by photographer Valerio Geraci.
Since he was very young, around the age of 9, he realised he was a “victim” of what he defines “American Soft power”, and he is fascinated by American movies and writers. After he purchased his first photographic book about America he started dreaming about a starred and striped road trip.
He began his adventure with his friend Pauline, travelling from Texas to California when he still was a law student. Later on Valerio will share the experience with his father and he will be so fascinated and delighted by what he sees, that in 2014 he will choose to abandon the law career to live the dream of being a full time photographer.
“In 2016 I ASKED MY FATHER TO JOIN ME AND MY THIRD-HAND MAMIYA IN A TRIP AROUND THE US. WE DROVE A LOT, FROM COLORADO TO WYOMING, THEN WENT TO CALIFORNIA DRIVING IN THE MYTICAL DAWN OF THE MONUMENT VALLEY“
In his work is really evident, as he himself states, that he is incessantly searching for spots far from the big cities and chaos, as it is evident his preference for uncontaminated landscape and daily-life portraits.
His priority is taking a slow drive to appreciate sunrises and sunsets, as it is to stop in small towns where people tend to be chattier and tell about their memories and stories.
“America”’s author is planning a new trip as soon as he is back, over and over. In 2017 and 2018 he kept travelling and creating new memories.
“I COULD SPEND MONTHS AND MONTHS DRIVING IN THE UNITED STATES JUST WATCHING THE LANDSCAPE CHANGING AROUND ME.“.
He has already traced on a map his new itinerary, the lines showing what he has yet to see. With his camera and a burning desire to go back where this all Valerio Geraci wants from his future plan is to “DRIVE WEST WITH THE SUN IN MY EYES”.
